Mountain Run Forest School
education off the beaten track
Welcome to Mountain Run Forest School!
Mountain Run Forest School is on a mission to empower young people to show up with kindness and courage: for the Earth and all its creatures, for themselves, for each other. Our goal is to provide your child with an exceptional education, while also preserving their right to a fresh-air childhood filled with play and wonder.
Whether you are looking for an enrichment opportunity for your homeschooled child once or twice a week, or a full time learning program, Mountain Run Forest School is right for you.
“Teach the children. We don’t matter so much, but the children do… Give them the fields and the woods and the possibility of the world salvaged from the lords of profit. Stand them in the stream, head them upstream, rejoice as they learn to love this green space they live in, its sticks and leaves and then the silent, beautiful blossoms. Attention is the beginning of devotion.” –Mary Oliver
Mountain Run Forest School has options to fit your family’s needs.
Fulltime Kindergarten
-
Is your child getting ready for kindergarten… but you’re not sure about public school? Wish they had more than 30 minutes of recess a day? Wondering how they’ll do with a large class, and sitting at a desk all day? Mountain Run Forest School has the answer— a gentle, fresh air experience for young explorers.
-
Kindergarten is a time for learning with our bodies and our senses! Outdoors in all seasons and all weather, forest kindergarten lets children move and grow and explore in a BIG way. By developing gross motor skills and interpersonal skills through outdoor, mixed-age play, we lay a strong foundation for the academic learning that will happen in elementary school. Our kindergarten class emphasizes play, while also introducing quality literature, prereading skills, and beginning math concepts.
Full Time Micro-School (Grades 1 + 2)
-
Whether your rising 1st or 2nd grader has started public school, and needs a change from big classes, rushed lunch and recess, fluorescent lights, and too much sitting— or if you’ve been homeschooling but wish for more structure and socialization in your child’s days— Mountain Run Forest School’s full time micro school is here to help.
-
Our full time micro school (think: one room school house, with small, mixed-age classes) gives students a rich, Charlotte Mason style curriculum covering all the subjects you would expect in traditional school (math, literature, writing, science, history), and the ones increasingly shouldered out in public schools (like music, art, elocution, RECESS).
We spend our mornings doing hands-on, literature-driven learning, and make time for outdoor free play in the afternoons. In addition, we have “Adventure Days” on Tuesday + Thursday, when we sally forth to local and national parks, private land with forest access, and swimming holes to enjoy
Part Time Forest School (Grades 1 - 5)
